Topics

In this two day seminar Andrew will be sharing some of the new insights now being considered in animal training and behaviour that have helped to build his dog centred care platform. Moving beyond the usual mechanics of behaviour change, Andrew will introduce the principle of caring for the individuals lived emotional experience, with a strong focus on social and emotional safety.

Andrew will begin by exploring what historically motivates our view of behaviour and the drive for behaviour change and make the case for why many of these views now need to be reappraised, referring to the latest in human and animal behavioural science.

Drawing from the human side of the lead as well, Andrew will show the many parallels that lie between the treatment of humans, especially children, and dogs in the pursuance of ‘good behaviour’.

Andrew will deep dive into the psychology of:

  • safety,
  • secure/insecure attachments,
  • trauma
  • and the important principle of relief and relief seeking behaviours for the individual.

Building on the theory, and moving beyond just the operant, Andrew will then take a very practical look at what this means in practice, with a special focus on:

  • support for puppies/adolescence
  • and working with reactivity and aggression.

Using real case studies and lots of video, Andrew will offer real world applications that can add to anyone’s existing toolkits.

Towards the end of the seminar Andrew will touch on the human end of the lead. When we see behaviour differently it not only changes how we work with animals but also how we support clients and, perhaps most importantly, support ourselves. Andrew will offer real insight into how we can be better at supporting clients to get best outcomes and keep ourselves emotionally safe in the process.

We hope this workshop will offer a real mindset shift for all who attend, and that everyone will take away many positive additions to their professional toolkits.
